The sun hung high over Blue Mountain Road, casting a golden glow across the landscape as Nelly and Kathy made their way toward the inn. The salty air of Puget Sound mingled with the scent of fresh grass, lending a sense of exhilaration to the anticipation of the day ahead. Nelly could feel the warmth of the sun on her back, contrasted by the cool breeze coming off the water.

“I can’t believe it’s been nearly three decades since I’ve celebrated the Fourth on the island,” Kathy expressed.

Nelly smiled, gazing up at the charming building of The Nestled Inn. “I remember. There was a state fair that year. You were determined to win that three-legged race. I think you tripped over your own feet more than once.”

Kathy laughed, a sound that brightened the afternoon. “How mean of you to bring that up! I was just trying to make it worthwhile.”

“Worth it, it was!” Nelly chuckled, her heart lightening as they stepped onto the porch of the inn. The vibrant blooms framed the entrance, welcoming them with a riot of color.

Trish was already outside, her blond hair shining in the sun as she waved excitedly. “Hey, you two! Welcome.”

“Trish! It’s so good to see you!” Nelly exclaimed, enveloping her friend in a joyful hug.

“Hello.” Kathy smiled politely. “This is really something. You have a beautiful property.” She looked around, taking in everything as she complimented Trish.

“Thank you. It takes a lot of work, but it’s definitely worth it.” Trish smiled. “Come on in! The grill’s fired up, and I made a ridiculous number of mixed juices that you have to try! It’s practically a rainbow of flavors,” Trish said, her blue eyes sparkling with excitement as she ushered them inside.

Stepping into the cool interior, Nelly was greeted by the mouthwatering aroma of grilled burgers and roasted corn wafting through the air. The long tables were adorned with an array of casseroles and salads, the vibrant colors promising a festive cookout atmosphere. Laughter filled the space, blending seamlessly with the sounds of sizzling from outside.

Nelly noticed Amy helping set the tables. “Hey, Amy!” she called out, exchanging smiles with the young woman.

As they made their way inside, Nelly felt a surge of warmth and familiarity wash over her.

“It smells amazing in here,” Kathy remarked. Nelly nodded, taking in the vibrant decorations that adorned the inn, complete with festive flags and twinkling lights.

“Just wait until you see the view from the lawn!” Trish exclaimed, leading them out into the lively atmosphere.

The sun cast a brilliant sheen over the gathering crowd, where a mix of friends and family mingled. Nelly spotted Reed tending the grill with enthusiasm as he flipped burgers and winked at the guests. Nearby, Nikki dished out plates with the grace of a seasoned hostess.

“Hey, Reed! Looking good at the grill!” Nelly called out, waving him over.

“Can’t let Trish do all the work,” he replied with a grin, wiping his forehead. “Besides, this is my chance to show off my skills. You want a burger?”
